Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week | October 24 - 30, 2016

Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of October 24 - 30, 2016. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.


Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week

Lydia West / Lynn University / Sr. / Middle Blocker / Port St. Lucie, Florida
West was the driving force behind the offense this week as Lynn went 2-0 on the road in SSC play. West led the Fighting Knights with 34 kills, averaging 4.86 per set, and hit at a .443 clip throughout two matches. In a 3-1 win at Nova Southeastern, West reached a career-high 25 kills with a .413 attack percentage. West's 25 kills are the most in a single match from a Fighting Knight in over five years. In a 3-0 sweep at Florida Tech, West totaled nine kills at a .513 attack clip. West is currently third in the league in hitting percentage for the season and 10th in kills per set. The Port St. Lucie product also had a big week defensively, leading the front row with eight blocks at 1.14 per set (four solo, four assisted) and moved into second place in the program record books with 57 career solo blocks in her three-year stint. Lynn is 15-8 overall and 6-4 in the SSC.

Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week

Taylor Fosler / University of Tampa / Fr. / Middle Blocker / Ocala, Florida
Fosler had a big week at the net, leading Tampa to a 3-0 week. The 6'3 middle blocker posted 13 blocks in nine sets of action, averaging 1.44 per set. In a 3-0 sweep of then first place Eckerd, Fosler posted five blocks while swatting six kills at a .444 clip (6-2-9) to hold the former first-place team in the SSC to a -.010 attack percentage as a team. The Ocala, Florida native continued with a three-block performance against Rollins College on the road, adding four kills while helping hold the Tars to a .031 team attack clip. Fosler finished the week with another five-block outing against Embry-Riddle, grounding nine kills at a blistering .615 attack (9-1-13) in addition to her solid defensive effort. The Eagles were limited to a .100 attack clip. Tampa's opponents hit a combined .041 across nine sets this week as the Spartans improve to 17-6 overall, 7-3 in SSC play.

Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week
7124Faycal Oulahbib / Nova Southeastern / Sr. / Midfielder-Forward / Paris, France
Oulahbib entered last Wednesday's match against Saint Leo with just one goal on the season, but struck twice in the first half to lift Nova Southeastern to a 2-1 win in the Sharks' SSC finale. Providing the game-winner, Oulahbib helped the Sharks play spoiler to the Lions' SSC Tournament chances and surpass the programs 2015 SSC win total. After opening the scoring in the 12th minute, Oulahbib notched the go-ahead goal against the defending SSC regular season champs in the 24th following an assist from Filippo Mancini.

Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
7027Christian Moerch / Florida Tech / Fr. / Goalkeeper / Oslo, Norway
Moerch earns his second SSC Defensive Player of the Week award following a pair of shutouts last week. The Oslo, Norway native turned away six shots against Barry, playing all 90 minutes in net to help the panthers to a 2-0 victory. The win at Barry locked Florida Tech into the SSC Tournament No. 3 seed and the right to host a quarterfinal matchup. In 75 minutes in goal against Embry-Riddle, Moerch stopped two shots as the Panthers prevailed, 4-0.

Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week
7125Amanda Traynor / Barry University / Jr. / Midfielder / Glasgow, Scotland
Traynor is named SSC Offensive Player of the Week after scoring a hat-trick against Rollins this past week. Traynor scored in the 4th, 22nd, and 72nd minute to lead Barry in a 4-0 victory over the Tars. The win against Rollins locked Barry into the SSC Tournament No. 3 seed and the right to host a quarterfinal matchup. Earlier in the week, Traynor added an assist in the Buccaneers 2-0 win over Eckerd in St. Petersburg.
 
Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
7119Megan Charlton / Saint Leo University / Jr. / Goalkeeper / Kent, Washington
Charlton led Saint Leo to back-to-back shutouts on the week including a, 2-0, win over No. 9 Nova Southeastern. Saint Leo went on to defeat Palm Beach Atlantic, 4-0, to clinch the SSC Regular Season title with a 7-1-1 record and now hold the No. 1 seed in the SSC tournament. Charlton sits at 6-2-1 in goal with two shutouts, both coming this week to seal the second SSC title in program history. Charlton tallied eight saves on 24 shots faced with no goals allowed in 180 minutes played

Men's Golfer of the Week
7127Niclas Weiland / Barry University / So. / Linkoping, Sweden
Weiland helped lead Barry to a second-place finish at the annual GolfRank Invitational last week hosted by Nova Southeastern at PGA National's Champion course, home of the PGA Tour's famous "Bear Trap". The team finished with a three-round score of 871, while Weiland finished in first place. Over the three-round tournament, Weiland shot a score of 211 to finish five-under par shooting two rounds of 72 (E) and one round at 67 (-5). The victory was the second in Weiland's collegiate career.

Women's Golfer of the Week
7122Tilda Larsson / Barry University / So. / Emmaboda, Sweden
Larsson won her third collegiate tournament this past week when she captured medalist honors in the 2016 Flagler Fall Slam. Larsson followed a first round 74 with a career low 70 during round two to finish even par (144). Barry took the team title at the 2016 Flagler Fall Slam against a field of 16 teams Eight of the 16 teams were ranked Top-60 in the latest GolfStat Relative Rankings.


Men's Swimmer of the Week
7126Jan Urbaniak / Saint Leo University / Jr. / Pozna, Poland
Urbaniak recorded three individual first-place finishes, two of which came with NCAA “B” cut qualifying times, to help lead Saint Leo to a 186 - 68. win over Rollins College, Friday afternoon in Winter Park, Fla. Urbaniak won the meet’s two distance freestyle events with NCAA “B” cut times. He won the 1000 Freestyle with a time of 9:34.89, and took first in the 500 Freestyle with a time of 4:35.78. Both times are second-fastest in the SSC this season in those events, while the 500 Free mark is third-fastest in all of Division II. Urbaniak touched the wall to claim first in the 400 Individual Medley with a time of 4:06.86; that times ranks second in the SSC, and eighth in all of Division II. Altogether, Urbaniak accounted for 27 points in Saint Leo’s team total of 186 in the win over Rollins.

Women's Swimmer of the Week
7121Natalia Garriock / Saint Leo University / Jr. / Duncan, British Columbia
Garriock turned in four of the fastest swims in the Sunshine State Conference this season in the 50 Free, 200 Back, 400 Medley Relay, and the 200 Free Relay, all of which were NCAA “B” cut qualifying times, while leading Saint Leo to a 198 - 64  win over Rollins College. Garriock swam a leg for Saint Leo’s first place teams in both the 400 Medley Relay (3:49.65) and the 200 Freestyle Relay (1:36.49), both of which were NCAA “B” cut times, fastest times so far this year in the SSC in those events, and second-fastest in all of Division II. Garriock’s lead-off 50 Free time of 23.78 in the 200 Free Relay is the fastest 50 Free in the SSC this season, and fourth-fastest in all of Division II. Finally, Garriock turned in winning times in both the 100 Backstroke (57.63) and the 200 Backstroke (2:02.40) in the win over Rollins. Her 200 Backstroke time was an NCAA “B” cut qualifying mark, the fastest time in the SSC this year, and second-fastest in all of Division II; the 100 Backstroke time was second-fastest in the SSC, and ninth-fastest in Division II. Altogether, Garriock either directly or through relays helped post 40 points for the Lions in the win over Rollins.   Week-by-Week Winners
